DISCUSSION:

The purpose of the City’s Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan is to provide the framework for the orderly development of new facilities, and improvements to existing facilities. This 2023 Master Plan update is the product of an analysis of existing conditions, a review of Chapter 7 of the City’s current General Plan, execution of a resident survey conducted in April 2019, and discussions with City officials and staff.

The City’s Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan was last updated in 2008. Accomplishments highlighted by this new 2023 Master Plan update include the addition of seventeen (17) new parks totaling forty-four (44) acres throughout the city, with Central City Park and South Fontana Park being two of the most notable additions since 2008.

This new 2023 Master Plan update includes recommendations for over $23 million dollars of city-wide park improvements, along with recreational facility improvements totaling $48 million dollars. The details of these improvements were shared with the City Council during a workshop presentation on September 26, 2023, followed by a presentation to the Parks, Community and Human Services Commission on October 26, 2023.

At their last regular meeting on January 25, 2024, the Parks, Community and Human Services Commission approved the recommendation by staff to forward the 2023 Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan to the City Council for their final approval and adoption.
